HAIR AND NAIL CARE

If you use beer as a hair rinse and styling lotion, it could be causing your dandruff. The alcohol dries your scalp.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cold Weather Hair and Nail Care
The hair and nails need as much hydration as the rest of you. Cold weather can turn both brittle. It’s very important to condition the hair and scalp at least two or three times a week to prevent hair breakage.
Alcohol will dry your skin and nails. Use hand lotion for your hands and cuticle oil to keep nails healthy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dandruff Shampoo Tip
You can improve the effectiveness of your dandruff shampoo by lathering your hair, then putting on a shower cap for 15-20 minutes. Remove it and rinse as usual.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ease Mild Dandruff
Wash hair daily with a mild shampoo. Lather your hair as soon as you get into the shower, leave it on until you’re nearly finished with your shower. Then rinse, follow with a light second lather and rinse thoroughly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hair and Scalp Care
Add a bit of baking soda to your favorite shampoo to help remove residue left from other hair care products. In your hand, mix hair shampoo with a small amount of baking soda and shampoo as usual.
If your hair turns green from chlorine in swimming pools, wash it with 1/4 cup baking soda added to your shampoo.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sun Away Your Dandruff
Ultraviolet rays help ease dandruff. Expose your scalp to the sun for about 30 minutes per day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thyme-ly Treatment for Dandruff
A thyme rinse can help alleviate dandruff. Boil 4 heaping tablespoons of dried thyme in 2 cups of boiling water for 10 minutes. Strain and allow to cool.
Pour half of the mixture over clean damp hair and massage into scalp. Do not rinse. Refrigerate what’s left to use with your next shampoo.

LIP CARE

Lips Too Large or Too Small? Let's Make Some Adjustments

Lips too Large- Use deeper colors and avoid shiny glosses. Deep colors help make the lips look smaller.

Lips too Small- Apply a small amount of lip gloss to middle of the bottom lip. Vaseline or a petroleum base product will also work in this case.

Tips for Luscious Lips

We all want luscious kissable lips. Here are a few tricks to help you achieve those beautiful lips.

For longer lip color wear, apply lip color and blot off the excess, this will help set your color. Then apply a thin layer of pressed powder and apply color again. This will give your color something to cling on to.
A thin layer of chapstick will also hold your lip color in addition to healing dry, chap lips.
For fuller, poutier lips, apply lip gloss in the center of your lips.
Lip lacquers give lips a high glossy look . This can be used alone or in conjunction with lip color.
For those evenings out on the town, use a lip gloss with a little glitter or an iridescent shade over your color.
If you like the matte look, use a lip primer before your apply lip color to keep your lips from drying out.

WINTER SKIN CARE TIPS

Be aware of dryness in the environment and you'll be halfway to solving winter skin problems. Your skin is in tune with its environment.

• Indoors – The average humidity of a centrally heated home or office is as low as 10%. Dry indoor air robs moisture from your skin, causing fine lines and irritation.

• Outdoors – Fierce winds and zero temperatures can cause the barrier function of the skin to break down and lose some of its shielding capabilities. The surface layers shrink, become rigid, and crack. How much moisture evaporates from the skin's surface is partly determined by the condition and health of the skin, and how well you protect it.

Although you cannot control your outdoor environment, you can create an indoor atmosphere that is supportive and nurturing to skin and will help reverse the effects of the outside elements.

To protect the skin, keep baths and showers short and the water temperature warm – not hot.

After the bath, seal in precious body moisture. Pat yourself dry (don't rub), and while skin is still warm and slightly damp, apply Botanical Body Oil.

Follow immediately with body moisturiser to maximise the skin's ability to hold moisture.

Take a teaspoon of lime-juice and stir in half a teaspoon of honey and few drops of milk. Mix well and apply over your face and neck fifteen minutes before you take your bath. This lotion will have a mild bleaching effect on a greasy skin, because of its excessive oil may be rather sallow.

BEAUTY TIPS - HAIR CARE

Is your hair dry and brittle? Is the color dull and lackluster? Forget expensive commercial products that can do more damage than good to your hair; treat your hair yourself, using all-natural ingredients found in your own kitchen.

DO-IT-YOURSELF CHOLESTEROL TREATMENT

Would you believe that most commercially bought cholesterol hair conditioners contain alcohol– the very thing that dries out hair? Instead, grab a cup full of mayonnaise, some plastic food wrap and throw a couple of towels in the drier on high.

Work the mayonnaise into your hair, starting by massaging it into the scalp and roots. Then draw it through to your ends until your hair is thoroughly coated. Pile the hair on top of your head. Take a couple of feet of saran wrap and wrap it around the top of your head to contain the mayo.

Take a pre-heated towel from the dryer and wrap it around your head over the saran wrap. The heat will aid with deep conditioning. After about 10 minutes, change to another heated towel and leave that on for another 10 minutes.

Remove the towel and plastic wrap and shampoo your hair as usual. Done once a month, this cholesterol treatment will keep your hair soft and shiny.

* Tip: if your hair ends are very damaged from chemical treatment, you can do this once a week. If your scalp is naturally oily, you might want to only add mayo to the hair ends for weekly treatments.

QUICK SOLUTION FOR OILY HAIR

If your scalp is naturally oil, you probably have to shampoo your hair daily to keep it from looking greasy or stringy. If, however, you are running short on time or need a quick lift in the middle of the day, grab a box of cornstarch and a large, clean blush brush.

Pour some cornstarch out onto a dish and dip the brush into it. Then, with a comb, part your hair in the center and brush the cornstarch onto your scalp and roots. Make another part 1/4 to ½ inch off-center and repeat. Continue this method down one side of your head, then from the center and down the other side.

Go about your business for about 10 minutes while the cornstarch soaks up the excess oils in your hair. Then, take a brush and brush out your hair, ridding it of the cornstarch flakes.

FOR A COLOR ENHANCER:

If your own natural color, or your color treated hair, begins to look drab, all you need are a few ingredients from your garden or local produce store to brighten it up.

Begin by boiling one quart of water. In a piece of doubled cheesecloth, add the following:

for brunettes– a handful fresh rosemary sprigs (bruise by crumpling in your hand)
for blondes– a handful of dried chamomile
for "orange tone" redheads– a chopped-up carrot
for "berry tone" redheads– a chopped up beet
Tie up the ingredient in the cheesecloth and toss into the boiling water, removing it from heat. Let steep for 10 minutes.

Remove and discard the cheesecloth bag. Shampoo and rinse your hair as usual. Then, pour the warm (not hot) color-enhancing rinse over your hair. As a final rinse, use a quart of cold water. Once a month treatments will keep your hair color vibrant.

BUILD-UP REMOVER

Often the culprits of drab coloring and lackluster hair are all the styling products that we regularly use. They begin to build up and dull the shine and tone of our hair.

Get rid of the build up by mixing 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar with 1 gallon of distilled water. This can be stored in a cabinet or the refrigerator and used every couple of weeks to keep hair squeaky clean. To use it, wet hair with warm water, or shampoo and rinse as usual. Then pour 2 cups over the scalp and let mixture saturate the hair. Finish up with a cold-water rinse.
